Norman Harper was born in south Essex and was organ scholar at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge, studying organ with Peter le Huray and Gillian Weir, and composition with Peter Tranchell. Further organ studies were undertaken with Noel Rawsthorne and David Sanger.
Following a career as teacher, choral director, recitalist and accompanist, Norman was appointed to the music staff of St George’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Southwark, where he served as organist and director of music until his retirement in 2017. Norman has played recitals at Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, Liverpool Cathedrals, St George’s Hall Liverpool, Bolton Town Hall, St Michael’s Cornhill, the Temple Church, St Bride’s Church Fleet Street, St John’s College & King’s College Cambridge, and many other major venues in the UK, America, Europe and Australia. He has broadcast solo organ recitals on BBC Radio 3 and directed or accompanied numerous broadcast services on BBC radio and television. His latest CD of 20th & 21st century British music, Church bells beyond the stars, was recorded at St George’s Cathedral and released in July 2022 on the Signum Classics label.
