The Meridian Ensemble
Saturday 17th September 2016 at 5:00 pm

There is a change to the programme previously published.

The players, under their leader and director Jesper Gasseling are advanced students at Trinity Laban. They will now be performing two works for string orchestra. The first is Britten’s Les Illuminations, with soprano Verity Bransom. Britten wrote these settings of Paul Verlaine in 1939-40, originally for soprano, although the cycle is often sung by a tenor. The songs are very approachable, and the string writing is very exciting.

The other work is an arrangement for string orchestra of the late String Quartet No 2 in G, Op 111, by Johannes Brahms. Brahms intended the piece to be his last work, and it is a summation of his mastery of his craft. The concert will last about an hour.
